PS5 PSVR Reportedly Features 4K and Eye-Tracking

PS5 PSVR

While the PS5 PSVR hasn’t received the typical “big reveal” treatment, it seems more information about its specs is trickling out ahead of its inevitable release.

According to UploadVR, sources say Sony has shared details for its refresh of PlayStation VR. This includes a 4K resolution, a lens separation adjustment dial, eye-tracking, and a motor in the headset to give haptic feedback.

The resolution of the PS5 PSVR headset will be 4000×2080 pixels, which works out to being 2000×2040 per eye. This amounts to around 8.3 million total pixels which is slightly more than a typical 4K display outputs. The device will also use USB Type-C to connect the headset to the console. Unlike its predecessor, the new headset will use onboard cameras to track the controllers which will seemingly simplify setup for the PSVR.

The article also speculates that the new PSVR headset’s alleged eye-tracking capabilities may be a game-changer for virtual reality. UploadVR speculates that the inclusion of foveated rendering, which is a rendering technique specific to eye-tracking equipment that reduces the quality of images in the peripherals, will improve the perceived sharpness of an image by supersampling the focus area. They also speculate that eye-tracking can greatly affect the overall VR experience such as improved throwing mechanics and more life-like interactions between people within an online space.

Back in March, Sony revealed the new controllers for the PS5 PSVR. Rather than using PlayStation Move controllers, the newly designed, orb-like VR controllers look more akin to the current Oculus controllers. The controllers will feature adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, finger touch detection, tracking, and the typical action buttons and analog sticks. To put it simply, it includes all the key features of the PS5’s DualSense controller but with a more ergonomic design for virtual reality.

There is no current release date for the PS5 PSVR. However, Sony has stated it will not be launching in 2021.
